When the first job board, Online Career Center, was launched in 1992, it completely changed the job research process and availability. The beginning of the online job search allowed applicants to view jobs and apply to them in-person, and later online just submitting an email. It marked the beginning of a new era, bringing job opportunities closer to applicants.
Today, over 30 years later, the process has barely changed. Despite huge technological advancements over the past three decades, the evolution of online job search processes has stagnated, and so have the results, failing to keep pace with the fast-paced, digitally-driven world of today. While some companies offer online applications and interviews, the fundamental requirement for resumes and cover letters remains outdated and inefficient, keeping the overall application and hiring process long and tedious for both the candidates and recruiters.
From one side, crafting resumes and cover letters is a time-consuming task for applicants, from the other side, recruiters spend valuable hours reviewing these documents, blocking the whole process. Indeed reports that 44% of applicants don't hear back for at least two weeks, keeping candidates stuck in this slow-moving process. The communication time through email is an average of 3 days: this level of delay is more than enough to lose prime qualified candidates to competition, or loss of interest, which can become very costly when there’s a high urgency to fill that role.
Deskless workers - workers who do not work with computers - face even greater challenges. These workers do not interact with computers on a daily basis, but live on their phones, and so all parts of the process should account for these difference in habits. Although 96% of Europeans own mobile devices, only 39% of company career websites are optimized for mobile use. The current computer-based application process creates barriers for candidates that have difficulties to provide the application documents instantly over their phones. As a result, many candidates who can’t climb these barriers, are lost during the process. Prime candidates who could be the missing piece and help grow your company.
If the conversion rate of this gap was bridged, companies would have a better chance of finding better candidates, faster. What once was a 20 to 45 minutes to apply for a company, could be a matter of 2 minutes. What once was a few days wait for full email communication, could be a matter of 2 minutes. Here at Bluco, that is exactly what we are doing to change the game. But more on that to come.
